Iran's president apologizes for strikes on neighbors as missiles and drones still pound their cities
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates โ Iran's president apologized Saturday for attacks on regional countries even as its missiles and drones flew toward Gulf Arab states, suggesting Tehran's political leadership could not exercise full command over the Islamic Republic's armed forces as intense U.S.-Israeli airstrikes rocked the nation, marking one week of the war. The message from President Masoud Pezeshkian, one member of a tripartite leadership council overseeing Iran since a Feb. 28 airstrike starting the war killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, again underlined the limited powers being exercised by the theocracy's leaders over its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The Guard, which controls the ballistic missiles targeting Israel and others, answered only to Khamenei and appears to be picking its own targets as the conflict widens. Pezeshkian's message, seemingly filmed in a hurry without professional broadcast equipment, appeared aimed at assuaging growing Gulf Arab anger over the attacks. But Pezeshkian suggested an order to stop attacks came Friday, hours before a wave of att

Korea manager tries to downplay magnitude of Japan game
TOKYO โ Hours before the start of a marquee showdown against Japan at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) on Saturday, South Korea manager Ryu Ji-hyun tried to downplay the magnitude of the occasion. "Of course, any game against Japan is very important. But for us, all four games in the first round here are important all the same," Ryu said at his pregame press conference at the Tokyo Dome. "As I was preparing for this game, I thought of an ancient saying that highlighted the importance of a leader to take a look at the big picture. And that's how I am going to approach it." South Korea started Pool C play with an 11-4 win over Czechia on Thursday, while Japan began its WBC title defense with a 13-0 beatdown on Chinese Taipei on Friday. With the top two teams from the group progressing to the quarterfinals, South Korea and Japan have both positioned themselves well for a knockout trip. And with two more winnable games on the horizon for South Korea against Chinese Taipei and Australia, Ryu may have an option of not pushing the envelope too much to eke out a win against Japan --- especial

Japan skipper wants to beat Korea playing Japanese way
TOKYO โ Japan manager Hirokazu Ibata said he would love for his team to defeat South Korea in their World Baseball Classic (WBC) playing in ways that make the country No. 1 in the world rankings. "I want to win this game playing the Japanese style of connected baseball," Ibata said at his pregame press conference at the Tokyo Dome, Saturday. This will be the second game of Pool C for both teams. South Korea beat Czechia 11-4 behind four home runs Thursday, and Japan also flexed its muscle in a 13-0 victory over Chinese Taipei, Friday. Asked how he would approach the latest installment of South Korea-Japan rivalry, Ibata said, "The scariest thing is a big blow with runners on base." "We have to do our best not to give up walks or commit errors on defense," the manager added. "As long as we win the game, it will be enough. I hope players will all do their part." Infielder Shugo Maki also spoke of South Korea's home run prowess. "Anybody in that lineup can hit a home run," Maki said. "Even though we won last night, this is a brand new game. So we will try not to give up the first run."

Lee lauds 'The King's Warden' on surpassing 10 mil. admissions
President Lee Jae Myung congratulated the South Korean historical film "The King's Warden" for surpassing the 10 million-admission mark, praising the achievement as particularly meaningful as it comes two years after the last film to reach the milestone. Directed by Jang Hang-jun, the period film depicts an unlikely friendship between village chief Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hai-jin) and the deposed King Danjong (Park Ji-hoon) during the latter's exile in the village. It reached 10 million admissions, Friday, becoming the first film at the South Korean box office to do so in two years. "Because this achievement comes two years after the last 10 million audience film, it is even more meaningful," Lee said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. "This is the valuable result created together by the filmmakers' outstanding imagination, power of storytelling and the generous support of the public." Lee watched the film with first lady Kim Hea Kyung at a local cinema during last month's Lunar New Year holiday period. The president said the popularity of the movie has proved the story's sincerity, wh
