Obsidian, roll over and over
Shinhan Young Artist Festa writers Bae Soyoung and Song Da Seul's <Rolling Black Stone: Obsidian, roll over and over> exhibit.
About
Shinhan Gallery will host "Rolling Black Stone: Obsidian, roll over and over" by artists Bae So Young and Song Da Seul, selected for the 2021-2022 Shinhan Young Artist Festa Group Contest which will run from November 10 to December 21. The exhibit begins with the creation of a space with different elemental properties. Bae So Young creates a "tropical forest where lava boils", while Song Da Seul makes a "glacial and arctic sea." The two artists gradually approach each other in the middle and show the energy, atmosphere, and byproducts created in the process of intertwining the two different elements through various forms of media in the exhibition hall.
The process of melting and solidifying each other when the heat and flowing lava of the rainforest meets the frigid cold and glaciers of the sea generates steam, creating a new substance, obsidian, in the smoke. The smooth surface of this black stone reflects external reality. Furthermore, the original heat it had becomes a five-colored energy that radiates from the inside. The black stone, which was born from the collision between lava and glaciers, cannot stay sedentary. From the desires and impulses in it, it rolls over and over again and becomes a new shape every time. Black stones record their journey by leaving traces behind them with their bodies. This journey ends when it is completely exhausted.
