Flowers on the Border
Neo Rauch & Rosa Loy's two-person exhibit
About
Flowers on the Border focuses on the two artists who pioneered the New Leipzig Style of painting in post-reunification Germany. Married couple and artists Neo Rauch and Rosa Loy have undoubtedly influenced each other's own works intentionally and unintentionally by serving as advisors and mentors to one another. In this exhibit, one can only notice the similarities and differences of the artist's imaginations and the fantastic atmosphere that presents various metaphors about human nature. Despite the couple sharing a similar cultural background and experiences, there is a difference between their perspectives and opinions on different subjects. Neo Rauch focuses on incidents and collects historical fragments which are then presented through mysterious themes and narratives in a surreal way, while Rosa Loy explores women's contemporary role in society structured within magical worlds such as fairy tales and fantasies. The exhibit's title, Flowers on the Border, represents exploration of the boundary between the two subjects. Boundaries always serve as a point of contention, uneasiness, and anxiety. However, they can also become dynamic, mixed, and anew.
